82 Story Lane – Festival of Childhood

Featured

82 Story Lane is a new and exciting exhibition and festival for families with primary school aged children. It’s run by the EXPO company and we imagined a new and revamped experience for attendees. Here’s flavour of what is planned.

WHERE MEMORIES ARE MADE
On the morning of February 7th 2015, families from around the country will arrive to the front door of 82 Story Lane. They’ll be met by our affable MC in Neverending Junction, who’ll guide them through the adventure that awaits them. They’ll get to amble up Adventure Boulevard, meander around Curious Drive, through the Enchanted Forest, along the Giant’s Highway into the Jolly Kingdom before entering Legend’s Meadow. And lest they lose their way, our Walking Talking Streetlights will be there at hand to shed some light on the situation and help our Treasure Seekers along their way.

HALL OF FAME – Kids of all ages will get to join in drum sessions; it’ll be loud, it’ll be interactive, it’ll be a barrel of laughs. There’ll be illustrators hosting workshops and teaching new skills and tricks to kids and families alike in our STUDIO 1 & 2, while the little ones can rest a while and satisfy their curiosity for play in the GINGERBREAD HOUSE and FAIRYLAND. Keep an eye out on for updates, as we’ll post the schedule soon on the website, via Twitter @82storylane and on our Facebook page. /82storylane

THE MURAL – A group of well-known Irish illustrators will create a mural beside the stage. By the time 82 Story Lane is over the mural will be complete and as part of our CSR philosophy, we will donate this to a selection of children’s hospitals and charities.

SALON DU CHAT – A chat without the chit. Interesting topics will be served up on a menu for children to choose a topic and get their conversational juices flowing. Parents will be amazed and intrigued about how much their kids have to contribute.

THE DREAMTREE is a place for all the family to write their dreams and aspirations. Derbhile will write to herself 30 years from now about her dreams for the future and Ailish will get the opportunity to write to her six year old self.

THE TREEHOUSE is our seminar room where parenting experts share tips on how to create a happy and harmonious family life.

WONDERS AND TREASURES
82 Story Lane is made up of many exciting, adventurous and inspirational lands. There will be surprises around every corner…

TREASURE ISLAND – inspiration for family holidays, fun days out, trips further afield and must-see places 100 ACRE WOOD – a giant den packed with toys, games, musical instruments and indoor and outdoor play equipment

LILLIPUT – includes a range of children’s clothes, accessories and furniture

NEVER NEVER LAND – Lots of exciting sports and outdoor activities that families can take part in together

GREAT EXPECTATIONS – information about education, family planning and insurance delivered with a light touch so it’s easy to absorb THE GIANT PEACH – Full of delicious food, ingredients for healthy family meals and cooking tips

Welcome New Member Jenna from HappyFeet Ireland

Tell us about your business:
HappyFeet Irelandwill deliver an enrichment program to children from age 2 to 6 initially in Pre-schools, Primary schools and community centres. The program uses nursery rhymes, songs, stories and fun games with a ball to maximize motor skill development.

Activities in all programs will focus on sports movements and concepts, with an emphasis on soccer. Children will be challenged to develop their balance, foot-eye coordination, spatial awareness and confidence. Our activities increase cardiovascular fitness, muscle development and overall endurance. HappyFeet coaches can format the activities using various methods to achieve the appropriate goals for a given group.

About Jenna

Jenna has been working in the Sports and Fitness Industry for the past ten years, and most recently graduated from UCD with a Masters in Sport & Exercise Management.

Her interest in Fitness began when she started her undergrad in Sports Management in UCD in 2003, she then continued her studies with University of Limerick, as she trained as a fitness instructor and personal trainer while specialising in Children’s fitness. She was given the opportunity to put these studies to practice in 2006,  when she began teaching Stretch N Grow, and she thoroughly loved teaching children as young as eighteen months the importance of exercise and eating healthy.

Her involvement in Sport is specifically in soccer where she has captained her local club Cabinteely Fc to many successful seasons, including gaining promotion to the DWSL Premier Division. Her involvement in the club wasn’t all playing, and under the guidance of the Director of Coaching in April 2007, she established weekly coaching sessions for the underage girls with an academy on Saturday mornings, this successful innovation was for the girls who didn’t want to ‘play with the boys’.  She is also heavily involved with the UCD Women’s Soccer Club, where she plays a key role on their committee since 2008.

She has currently taken a break from playing, as she became a first time mum in January 2014 to her baby girl but she is extremely excited about her involvement with Happy Feet Ireland as it allows her the opportunity to combine her love of soccer and interest in teaching children the importance of staying fit and healthy!

Welcome our New Member Carmel founder of Karmel`s Kitchen

My name is Carmel and I founded Karmel`s Kitchen. I’m married with 3 children, our home and kitchen are always busy with family and friends visiting, I have been cooking and baking for over thirty years gaining experience while feeding a hungry family of 5. I have always had a passion for cooking which originates back to growing up in a large family.

The inspiration for Karmel’s Kitchen came to me during one of the many days baking with my 11 yr. old daughter and her friends. The children enjoyed these little culinary sessions so much they didn’t even realise they were gathering valuable skills.

It seemed a natural progression to broaden the scope of this and start offering classes to children so that more kids could learn the importance of cooking with an emphasis on fresh healthy produce. I wanted to encourage the children to understand that cooking with fresh food was so easy and so much tastier than the processed options available. Couple this with a solid ethos of food hygiene and a valuable life skill is being gathered in a fun environment.

Our Mission

At Karmel’s Kitchen we have an emphasis on teaching children good basic healthy home cooking in a pleasant & safe environment. Our aim is to allow the children to get involved in most aspects of creating a menu while teaching them basic kitchen hygiene.

We want to make this as easy for parents as possible so we will provide all ingredients for your children’s menu. We will provide each child with a chef’s hat & apron every week so parents don’t need to worry and we will also provide disposable food containers for children to take their food portion home.

New Member BabySplash – Amanda O`Beirne

Amanda O`Beirne is the founder of BabySplash. Welcome to our baby swim school.  Join one of our baby and toddler swimming classes and experience the wonderful world of teaching your child to swim2ce6c4d

Infant swimming tuition, although common place in much of the world, is relatively new in Ireland. Through teaching our own daughter to swim, we quickly realised that this type of class was a fantastic experience for both parents and children. Recognising that there was a  desire for an indigenous Irish owned company, we sought to satisfy this need.

rsz_babysplash2

We would like to provide this opportunity to a wider community and to make infant swimming more accessible to everyone.  We do this through providing classes at a more affordable price whilst maintaining and improving on the standards of classes currently available.

droppedImage_1 (1)

We believe that by providing well structured, regular swimming classes for babies and toddlers we will give parents and children the opportunity to become confident, happy and safer in the water and grow a healthy lifestyle incorporating exercise into daily life from an early age.

Baby swimming provides an activity which allows parent and child bonding and also allows infants to use muscles and move in a way they are unable to do on the land. This has been shown to improve physical and mental development of the child

The inspiration for this approach comes from the Peruvian Amazon native people where Francoise Freedman conducted her doctoral research for Cambridge University.

Welcome to Salubria The Health Game

The NEW question and answer card game that promotes the benefits of  healthy living – in an interactive and fun way.  Salubria is competitive,  it’s very educational, and it could seriously improve your health!

Salubria – The Health Game ™ is the first product created and developed by Creative Learning Tools Ltd. (CLT) – based in County Wicklow, Ireland.  CLT was founded in 2009 by husband and wife team, Pat (PJ) Shankey, and Frances O’ Duffy.

PJ originally qualified in electronic engineering, and he set up the computer maintenance companyComputer Hospital (still trading after 20 years). He also holds a Business Degree.  More recently, in 2005, he qualified as a fitness instructor, after giving up smoking, and losing over 2 stone in weight! Frances holds a Business Degree, and a   marketing qualification, and has worked in marketing, media, and other communications.

Kicking the Smoking Habit

“I had given up trying to ‘give up’ cigarettes, as I had tried and failed so many times” says PJ.  Then, one day, I found myself listening to a motivational tape where the author ‘Anthony Robins’ was describing how making a decision properly had to be agreed in the head before it could be successfully implemented in reality.

So I decided one final time – to give up cigarettes – taking the advice from the tape.  When the urge came to smoke, I would distract myself by running up and down the stairs, or jogging on the spot, until the urge to smoke had passed because I had made a deal with myself to do something good for my health when I got these urges!  So, I became very fit responding to the cravings, and so began my journey to a smoke-free and much healthier lifestyle.

I succeeded in giving up cigarettes, took up regular jogging, joined a gym, and then, in 2005, I became a fitness instructor.  Around that time, I came across a Department of Health report on overweight and obesity and was shocked to learn that two thirds of the Irish population was either overweight or obese.  I was further shocked to learn how overweight often leads to obesity, and how obesity can negatively impact on a person’s long term health and quality of life – and that of family members, who often end up acting as carers.

Having rescued myself from the probability of long-term obesity and associated ill-health, I really wanted to help as many people as possible to live as healthily as possible – and avoid lifestyle diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and many cancers.  I began examining and researching what information was available to help the average person learn about key influencing factors such as proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and making healthy lifestyle decisions.  Though a lot of good information was out there on these topics, it’s often quite ‘information heavy’, and for some people, the information comes too late.

Making ‘Health and Fun” one

My challenge was to provide relevant, bias-free, easy to understand bite-sized information, in a way that appealed, in particular, to families – targeting 10 year olds onwards (and adults). Research has shown that so often, the health of the family is very influenced by the health knowledge, and behaviour, of the mother.

So I came up with the idea of a health game, and after 3 years working with Frances on market research, play testing, information validation, and many obstacles and challenges, the idea evolved into Salubria, the health educational tool – in the form of a card game.

We have ideas for different versions of it – so watch this space!

We hope you enjoy playing Salubria and that most of all, you learn something that helps you to become healthier, and to kick some bad habit – just as I kicked the cigarettes.

We’d love to hear your stories about how Salubria has helped you, or your family – tell us on our facebook page: facebook.com/salubriathehealthgame

The Cards are in your hands now!

New Member Ildiko Kiss – Graphic designer, interior designer, illustrator and the creator of a new and exciting Irish children’s brand – Fionnuala and the Gang.

Hello, I am Graphic designer, interior designer, illustrator, mompreneur and the creator of a new and exciting Irish children’s brand – Fionnuala and the Gang. An exciting, educational and engaging series of products for children. Based on Irish native animals.
The Story Behind Fionnuala and the Gang
How it all began: My journey commenced while I was trying to find some bright and happy artwork for my children’s bedroom (a boy and a girl); something that would suit both of them. In the absence of finding anything that I felt would work, I developed a series of characters myself, all of whom are based on native Irish animals.
Since then, I have grown the series which is now called ‘Fionnuala and the Gang’. Fionnuala herself is a frog from Cork and amongst her friends are Barry the Badger, Daragh the Deer, Ollie the Owl and so on. I am aiming to capture a young audience with these characters.
I am currently working on a series of stories using these characters about their adventures around Ireland, e.g. ‘The Magic Stone’ tells a story about a trip to Blarney Castle, ‘The Giants’ tells a story about a visit to the Giant’s Causeway. The colours are bright and engaging, perfect for parents reading to their children from an early age, teaching them new words and helping them learn about the various animals around Ireland.
I often find that young children will recognise lions and zebras before owls and badgers, so this series will create an awareness of our own native animals. Fionnuala and the Gang is an exciting, educational and engaging series.

Jumpzter set up by some nice mums and we have a good handful of kids between us

About Jumpzter

We started jumpzter because our kids kept asking us ‘What’s there for us to do in London/ Dublin/ Paris?’ and we found it hard to find out. We were also busy emptying a tin of beans into a saucepan at the time so we asked our kids to go off and do some research. But they couldn’t either. There was lots of info on the web – too much – and all written for dull Oldies like us. So we decided to build a website for smart kids – and their smart parents – that spilled the beans (no, not those ones) on places to go, written in a language that we thought kids would enjoy.

It’s packed full of useful and some silly information, penned by professional writers and is all moderated by parents. It’s also a safe place for kids to share their travel experiences and earn points for rating and reviewing places they’ve been, so it’s educational. But not in a boring way. We hand-select the best places for you to go so you don’t have to trawl through trillions of listings online. We have lots of fun checking out places for kids and all our information is impartial and independent. We don’t accept bribes, cakes, vouchers or icecream for favourable coverage. Though you can try. We’ll eat the cake and then say no. We promise not to sell on your information to anyone. We like our privacy too.

And now we can go back to making tea and let the kids do the work.

Who is the jumpzter team?

Oda O’Carroll and Etain O’Carroll are sisters and they are both travel writers. They write for Lonely Planet guidebooks but also for other travel guides and fancy newspapers. Oda’s secret talent is that she can bend her fingers back very far and Etain can change a nappy and play Greensleeves on the tin-whistle at the same time.

Geraline Cole is the Cap’n of the ship, she’s worked for donkey years in Computer Science so knows all the tricks, like turning the computer off and on when it doesn’t work.

The National Digital Research Centre and Enterprise Ireland in Dublin also support us. We try to get them to babysit now and again but they’re usually too busy.

Free Family Fun Day Sept 15 Flightfest – hope to see your at it

FlightFest, a once-in- a-lifetime, international fly past, will take place in the centre of Dublin City on Sunday, 15th September 2013. This will be a truly historic event involving more than 30 aircraft flying at low level following the path of the Liffey right through the centre of Dublin.

FlightFest is expected to be one of the largest National events of ‘The Gathering Ireland 2013’ and is expected that thousands of people from Dublin, all over Ireland and abroad, will line the banks of the River Liffey from Dublin Port up to the Customs House, in the centre of Ireland’s capital city, to experience this unique FlightFest.

Many large commercial aircraft from Ireland and abroad have been invited to participate, such as Boeing 737 and 767, ATR 72, Embraer 195, and Airbus 320, 321, 330, A340 and Superjumbo A380. The Irish Air Corps, the UKs Royal Air Force, a number of helicopters, and some historic vintage aircraft (including the famous B-17 Sally-B Memphis Bell World War II bomber) are also scheduled to participate.

All major Irish airlines are supporting FlightFest, including Aer Lingus, Ryanair, CityJet, Air Contractors, and Aer Arann (Aer Lingus Regional), with other international airlines being lined-up. The sustained flypast through Dublin city centre will take up two hours to complete and the flights will be sequenced five minutes apart.

Where does FlightFest take place?

The FlightFest Fly Past takes place over the River Liffey.
The Liffey Quays will be pedestrianised between Custom’s House Quay to the East Link Toll Bridge on the Northside, and from Georges Quay to the end of Sir John Rogerson’s Quay on the Southside.
Within this Event Area on both sides of the Quays, you will be able to watch the Fly Past, purchase food, and enjoy all of the family festival activities and facilities.
Please refer to the illustration map for further information which will be available within the next 24hrs.

What time does FlightFest start and end at?

Sunday 15th September 2013
12:00: Kick-off of all the family festival activities, so come early to enjoy the fun!
13:50 – 17:00: Fly Past period. [During this period, aircraft will fly over the Liffey as part of a sustained aerial Fly Past]
18:00: End of all street activities.
Road closures: 06:00 – 19:00

Where is the best viewing area?

Due to the fact that this is an aerial event, you will be able to view the aircraft and enjoy the FlightFest Fly Past from anywhere within the pedestrianised zone between Dublin Port (East Link Toll Bridge) and the Custom’s House (Matt Talbot Bridge).
